Marabana
Runners of 73 countries participate this Sunday in the 21st edition of the Marabana Marathon in this capital, according to Carlos Gattorno, president of the Organizing Committee.

Gattorno said near 600 foreign athletes registered, a figure to which are added another 400 students of the International School of Physical Education and Sports, located to the southeast of this capital.

Organizers also mentioned the presence of Pan American female marathon Champion Mariela Gonzalez (CUBA), with wide domain in the half marathon over the last years.

Gonzalez climbed the podium for the first time in 1994, when she got the title followed by Yunia Reyes and Noleydys Gonzalez.

The following year she could not be included among the medalists and in 1996 she finished third escorting Yesenia Centeno and Milagros Rodriguez, but from then on the highest seat corresponded to her.

Since 2001, she has gotten the best mark for the distance: one hour, 14 minutes and 56 seconds, breaking the record by Emperatriz Wilson, who had established five records on line before.

Marathon runners of both sexes will struggle to fulfill the established registrations for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, a condition that Gattorno considers "not very probable, although not impossible."
