Cuba win again at World Cup

Favorites Cuba improved to 4-0 in group B by downing South Korea 7-2, Panama humiliated Italy 6-0, the United States defeated Japan 5-1 while Australia trounced Thailand 26-1.

Host Taiwan scored its third win in as many matches, 8-4 over Spain at the 37th Baseball World Cup yesterday, to take another step toward the quarterfinals.

In other games, Canada shut out Germany 10-0, the Netherlands trounced Venezuela 7-4 and Mexico defeated South Africa 13-3.

Dodgers' minor leaguer Delwyn Young hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead the U.S. for the 5-1 victory over Japan.

The win left the U.S. with a 3-1 record after four games in the tournament.

The 2007 World Cup opened on Wednesday and runs until Nov. 18, with the games played at four stadiums in Taipei in northern Taiwan and Taichung in central Taiwan.

Sixteen teams are participating in the biannual event staged by the International Baseball Federation.
