Italy beat gold medal hopes the United States 6-2 on the third day of the 37th baseball World Cup in Taiwan on Friday. Italy, whose best ranking was ninth, beat a US team comprising Major and Minor League players.
Spain meanwhile bettered South Africa 7-4, South Korea defeated Thailand 18-2 and Australia triumphed over Venezuela 7-4.
In other evening games, Panama beat Mexico 3-2, Taiwan demolished Japan 6-1, the Netherlands downed Germany 15-5.
The 16-team World Cup opened on Wednesday and will end on November 18, with the games played at four stadiums in Taipei and Taichung.
