Cuban athlete Dayron Robles wins another title

Only a month and a half after walking off with a gold medal in the 15th Pan-American Games, Dayron Robles maintained his excellent level of performance to take another title in the athletic meet that took place in Slovakia.

The Guantanamo-born runner clocked on this occasion with a time of 13:07 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles - his second best time this year behind the 13:05 seconds he ran one week ago in Linz, Austria.

Four days after the Austrian contests, Robles also led with 13:21 seconds in the Grand Prix in Brussels, Belgium.
Another competitor exhibiting enviable form was triple jumper Yargelis Savigne, the winner in Rio de Janeiro and the world champion one month later in Osaka. She has just caught the attention of crowds in Slovakia with a leap of 14.65 meters.

These two athletes are heading the Cuban delegation that won the right to compete in Stuttgart, Germany next weekend in the World Finals of Athletics. It is also possible that Robles will later advance to Shanghai to participate in the Grand Prix, held every year in that Chinese city. That competition is scheduled for Sept. 28.

Should Robles make it to Shanghai, another collision will surely take place between the Cuban hurdler and local runner Liu Xiang - the Olympic title holder, world record holder and recently crowned world champion, with a time of 12:94 seconds.
It would be an ideal occasion for Robles to conclude season by breaking the national record of 13 seconds, a mark that resists being beaten.
